IS TECHNOLOGY A BOON OR NOT ?

Image source : Pexels stock photos

Technology is not something which can be defined in a simple definition. It is something which has transformed man from the lowest degree of a caveman to the highest position of a spaceman. Technology which is being introduced and improved almost everyday is making our lives simpler. Though these technologies have both merits and demerits, they are more or less making the human kind smarter. We people, living in the twenty- first century have experienced all those ‘dreams’ written in early science fictions. Technology thus is outstandingly impacting our lives and has helped us make our life simpler and smarter.

Technologies are not something that happened overnight but it is the end result of many intellectual hard work over the years. The invention of radio, telephone, television, computer, mobile phones etc are the fascinating outcomes of the early and late technologies. And to a great extent these have become our one of our basic necessities. Everything and anything can be known from the extensive range of information from internet just at the ease of a click. These technologies which is developing over years have made India a software super-power.

Internet as part of technology is being used for business and educational fields, transportation schedule, marketing areas, online shopping . Due to this improved technology important news reach us super-fast. We are very fortunate to witness some of the most fascinating technical advancements like social media which enables us to be more social and it further created many interactive platforms. Social networks, blogs, reviews, conferences are also a result of these awesome technologies, which not only is catching the attention of the youth, but both old and young alike.

Science is the greatest boon man has ever got and technology is the best tool for constructive purposes. This same technology has also improved the health facilities of medical science and also enabled us to dream of life in outer planets. It gave us the vision in robotics and satellite launching. These technology has made our life easy, simple, comfortable and luxurious.

Now let us take a look at the demerits of technology.

Social medias nowadays are the explicit application of technology. Instagram , Facebook , tik tok etc are the platforms where people post personal pictures and videos . Intrusion of privacy is an issue. Misuse of personal pictures is another.

Technology , these days also has replaced the jobs with machines and gadgets which leave people jobless and much more accurately lazy . Over exploitation of electronic gadgets is harmful to the people themselves as it becomes an addiction and leads to many major health issues . As people becomes glued to the electronic gadgets they lose their connection with the nature.

Nature was considered as a mother by our ancient poets ; paganism ; a religion where nature was worshiped , by people. Wordsworth was the greatest example and representation of a nature loving generation . Now in this twenty first century where we witness such a technological boom , there is no more nature worshiping or not even adoring the beauty of nature . This is definitely a crisis that the humanity is going to suffer in the upcoming years . Dante’s ‘ Divine comedy ‘ , an eminent piece of work in the list of Italian literature evidently depicts the picture of hell , his inferno ( 9 circles of hell ) is said to become true in the future years and human race will witness a devastating situation as a consequence of the over booming technology and destruction of nature . Science and technology has also been used as a weapon at times of wars . If this technology reaches the wrong hands then it is a devastating situation for the world economy . These technological developments is also a deviation from our traditional path .

It is high time we do something about this . The youth is always backbone of an economy , if the awareness and precaution is taken by the youth , then the future is secured. Nobody’s control over the other is efficient as much as self control over oneself . One should have self awareness in using all the electronic gadgets and technological application . In this modern world where friends are more influential than family , good and effective peer group must be formed . It is the duty of the present generation to make sure that the technology is used in a positive and informative way without using it negatively or let it manipulate us to assure a promising future.

INDIAN CINEMA THEN AND NOW

By Daya and A. K. Anagha

The Indian cinema became immensely popular with the 2000 films which were produced in various languages, every year. The industry dates back to the 19th century, more than hundred years ago. The very first film was shot by The Lumière brothers” which was shown in Mumbai. This marked the birth of a gigantic Indian cinema. Indians were inspired and fascinated by this, which led to yet another milestone in the history of Indian cinema. Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar, commonly and popularly called “Save Dada” shot a short clipping – “The Wrestlers” -which was then shown as a film shot at the hanging garden in Mumbai. It was considered as the first motion picture of the movie industry. The father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke released the first ever full-length feature movie by the name “Raja Harischandra” in 1913. The reason behind this movie’s standing out among the others was not just because it was the first movie released, but because of the fact that Dada Saheb was the director, writer, cameraman, editor and the art director. He made the movie entirely of his own. The biggest achievement he had was that his first movie became the first ever Indian film to be screened in London in 1914. There’s a whole world of home-grown list about our favorite Indian flick, ranging from the one with artistic merit and acclaim to the film that is just ridiculously popular. From the time when the first Indian sound film “Alam Ara” was produced in 1931 till the present decade, this industry has a remarkably rich history of producing a variety of movies, showcasing different spheres of Indian life via different themes- Comedy, Romance, Thriller, Horror and Drama. However, there has been a changing trend in the representation of Indian film through the years. The way movies were made in the 1950’s is completely different from the way it is done in the 21st century. The Indian film industry can be broken down widely into four subcategories.

The first phase would consist of the movie made from 1940’s till the early 1965’s. It is called ‘The Golden Era of the Indian Cinema’, where critically acclaimed movies like “Awaara” (1957), “Shree 420” (1955) and “Mother India” (1957), to name a few, were made. Their movies revolved around the common people and various day to day struggles of life, something audience could relate to and would help to finally come out as a man with the right morals.

The second phase is from late 1960’s to the early 1980’s. This phase saw a distinctive shift in movies, like, “Aradhana” (1969), “Anand” (1970), “Bobby” (1973), which marked this period. These movies were more action based and romantic in nature. Violence became an integral part. A lot of emphasis was given on villains, who were basically underworld mafias.

The third phase, that is from the late 1980’s till early 2000’s, saw the most diverse shift in movie making procedure, in India. Advanced technologies were introduced in the country. The first scientific fiction movie “Mr India”, released in the year 1987, was a super hit. Romance, was still the main theme. Comedy movies were also a hit in this phase.

The last and the ongoing phase started in late 2000. This phase introduced a lot of technical advancement in the way movies are made. From “Koi Mil Gaya” (2003) to “Ra. One” (2011), movies put a great emphasis on the visual effect rather than the story. A lot of movies have been shot abroad, with only the mention of India.

The main reason why there has been a shift in the content and the way movies are made in the last few decade is because the target audience is changed. In the early phase, the target audience consisted of the poor people hailing from villages and the movies were made so that they could relate to the protagonist. As time shifted and the urban class expanded, the target audience became the upper middle class or the upper class, who related more with the hero, who has a rich lifestyle, lives in Bungalows and travel in expensive cars. Most movies generally like to deliver what the audience desired.

The Indian Film Industry has become more professional in the last two decades.

In conclusion, the changing pattern in movie is basically the result of the changing mindset of the audience as well as a bid to attract International audience who have different perspective than the ones for whom movies are made since the 1950’s.

Purify your dreams with Dreamcatcher

By Sivapriya S. and Arya M. C.

We all know that a Dreamcatcher is a sort of thing used for a decorating purpose, but besides that it also has a meaning and history too. Originally created by the American Indians, it usually consists of a small wooden hoop covered in a net on web of natural fibers with meaningful sacred items like feathers and beads, attached, hanging down from the bottom of the hoop. You’ve probably seen a dreamcatcher hanging from a tree, a porch or even in a shop and wondered about its purpose and meaning.
Generally we associate the dreamcatcher with Native American culture, but it is often believed to have originated from the Ojibwe Chippewa tribe, a North American Indian tribe, in particular. Even though, most ethnographers believe the dreamcatchers were passed down from the Ojibwe through intermarriage and trade, the Lakota Tribe, a Native American tribe, also has its own narrative about the origins of the dreamcatcher. The Ojibwe word for dreamcatcher actually means “spider” referring to the web woven to loosely cover the hoop. The Ojibwa people found them to be a symbol of protection and comfort. According to their story, a mystical and maternal “Spider Woman” served as the spiritual protector for the tribe, especially for children. As the population of the Ojibwe people increased, the “Spider Woman” found it difficult to protect and watch over all the members of the tribe as they migrated farther and farther away. Due to this reason she created the first dream catcher. Following her, the Ojibwe people recreated the maternal keepsake as a means of mystically protecting their children and families from afar.
Dreamcatcher are traditionally used to protect people, usually children, from bad dreams and nightmares, because of which it is often referred to as “Sacred Hoops”. It is believed that these dreamcatchers would purify the bad dreams and leave good dreams. When it is hung above the bed in a place where the morning sunlight can hit it, the dream catcher attracts and catches all sorts of dreams and thoughts into its webs. Good dreams pass through and gently slide down the feathers to comfort the sleeper below. Bad dreams, however are caught in its protective net and destroyed, burned up in the light of day.

When you gift someone a dreamcatcher, you are actually sharing the history behind it. It is not like any other ordinary gift. Through the dreamcatcher, you actually convey the message that you care about the person’s well being and peace of mind.

Machines are more like humans. In the 21st century, humans rely
on gadgets to store information that is vital.  Data and other documents
are stored in those gadgets and people believe that its safer because earlier
the documents were manually recorded and most of them are not existing now. It
is quite evident that humans relay on machines. Machines have vital role in
industrial development. Digital technologies support companies to accelerate
according to the trends. Both internet and computers together to connect with
our lives seamlessly which make sense of the world.

Technology makes life more easy and informative. Information is available in
a way that was unimaginable just a few decades ago. Technology lies behind
global development and it provides information on health care, business and
technology. Technology has transformed our lives.

People rely on machine’s opinion even for the most important and
vulnerable situations and its quite clear that machines are playing a vital
role in the world.

Human brain and machines combine to have a great impact to world’s
development. Earlier we had a misconception that we all individuals, companies
and countries have no facility to foresee anything but technology has changed
the way we look at world. Artificial Intelligence has helped us make massive
changes in research and development. We can in fact make great changes to the
world if we combine both human brain and technology.

WHERE IS OUR MIND?

By Deepika R Nair and Varsha A.S

Often we wonder about were these thoughts are originated? Do they come from our “mind”? Is the mind a part of the brain? What is this “Mind” exactly? Well theoretically speaking it is a set of cognitive faculties of consciousness, imagination, perception, thinking, judgement, memory and language. The “Mind” is considered as a link to our unconsciousness. Many theories and approaches have been made by philosophers and psychologists on the origin of mind and where it is present.

Mind is often referred as a seat of human consciousness. Sigmund Freud, Father of Psychology suggests that, there are three levels of consciousness: ‘conscious’, ‘preconscious’ (subconscious) and ‘unconscious’. This theory, talks about the sources and consequences of emotional conflicts and how people deal with it.

Conscious includes the thoughts feelings and actions which people are aware of. It refers to one’s individual awareness of unique thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations etc. For example the conversation we are having with someone or a task we are doing comes under conscious awareness. Preconscious includes the mental activity of which people may become aware only if they attend it closely. It is the stuff of which dreams are made. Every experience we have ever had, every thought, every impression of loss or gain, resides in our subconscious mind .For example remembering the birthdate of our parents or recollecting a small incident comes under sub consciousness. The last level is the unconscious , it includes the mental activity that people are unaware of. According to him, the unconscious is a reservoir of animal drives. It stores all ideas and wishes that are concealed from conscious awareness,as they might lead to psychological conflicts. Most of these arise from sexual desires which cannot be expressed openly and therefore are repressed. Even though we’re not aware of their existence, they have a significant influence on our behaviour. If one is unsuccessful in resolving these conflicts they can result in abnormal behaviour.

From Freud’s theory , there are three primary elements of personality which reside in the unconscious- id, ego and super ego.

  • Id works on the pleasure principle, which assumes that people seek pleasure and avoid pain. Id does not care for moral values society or other individuals.
  • Ego is said to be frown out of id. It seeks to satisfy an individuals needs in accordance with reality and thus works by the principle of reality.
  • Superego is like a moral branch of mental functioning. It tells the id and ego whether the gratification for a particular thing or instance is ethical or not.

For example- the id of a boy, who wants chocolate tells him to grab the chocolate and eat it. His ego tells him that if he grabs the chocolate without asking, he may be punished. So, working on the reality principle, the best way to get it is to ask permission to eat the chocolate. If a boy wants a chocolate and asks his mother for it, his superego will indicate that his behaviour is morally correct.

Unlike the Brain, the mind does not have a physical structure nor has a location. Mind cannot exist without brain, but mind is a separate entity. At the same time, Philosopher Descartes says that mind interacts with the body at the pineal gland and regarded it as the principal seat of the soul and the place in which all our thoughts are formed.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

It was during my periodical exams I heard about the massive spreading of a deadly virus, Corona. At first I thought that it was just a virus that made us sick, but it grew out beyond my imagination. It was a wild disease that killed more than 5000 people at present and made one lakh above affected cases.

Declared as a Global Public Health Emergency, COVID-19(the name given to Coronavirus) is something that we must be really be aware of.it was initially detected in China but it has spread over 33 countries during a period of eight months. So this means that it is pandemic and can affect a person very easily.  But all i want to say is not to panic. This is a disease that we can control by ourselves, only if we take appropriate precautions. First of all we need to be aware about the symptoms. It is mostly of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, so that, symptoms will range from common cold to more severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia, then fever, cough etc. In humans transmission takes place via respiratory secretions of an infected individual, that is either through the droplets from coughing or sneezing or indirectly through touching contaminated objects as well as close contact, such as touching or shaking hands and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. In order to prevent the risk of the infections ,basic preventive measures are advised for the public like having good hygiene ,frequent and careful hand washing , timely use of face masks, avoiding unnecessary touching of eyes ,mouth and nose and also avoiding contact with the sick people.

Even if you had a close contact with someone who has COVID-19, don’t worry, immediately notify public health authorities in your area and they will provide guidance on further steps to take. So the important thing to note is that you should not hide about your disease. There were cases, that increased the intensity of disease in a state only because of the irresponsibility that people showed towards themselves and also to the seriousness of the situation. Thus, it is kindly advised to stay aware and obey the instructions given by the authorities without any hesitation. Always remember,

SWEATER WEATHER IS BETTER WEATHER

By Sreedevi and Arundhati Krishna

Seasons change through the year and so does fashion. Summer’s the best for it, right?! Not exactly, what with the sweat, grease and impromptu heat flashes. And as much as cold weather sucks, when it comes to fashion it becomes the top-tier season….. the season where you look like your most glam self!!!

Winter is textile galore. I mean, most of your clothes in summer are limited to materials that are not-so-thick and basically anything that’s cotton. But as the cold wind blows over, pull out your velvet, leather and knits. Wear your sweaters, sleeves, jackets, without having to worry about you body burning up — and flatter your body in the process.

A high updo is probably and practically the only thing you can handle during the humid summer. But with winter, you can weart it up or down. Let it flow or bind it up. Your choice!!…… And the best of it…..

Bye-bye greasy hair ’cause all you gotta do is throw on a pretty little beanie.

Turtlenecks and tights……. Seriously, is there anything more to say???

Hair removal is strenuous, costly and downright painful. And it’s horrible when most of your wardrobe is ruled by short sleeves…….. Well, unless you’re part of a biker gang, and prefer leather jackets all day every day…… That’s why, in winter, those two are your buddies.

You can never go wrong with too much layers…. _Joey with Chandler’s coats is an exception_……. It’s chic, classy and feels like a warm hug. Blazers, cardigans, sweaters and fur coats ( faux, OBVIOUSLY ).

Forget about dainty earrings and grab those funky ones…… It’s the time for maximalist accessories — personalized hairpins, thick gold chains, chokers and earcuffs. Be bold and outrageous this winter!!!

Come winter and it’s the time for chunky footwear, socks, shawls, scarves and HATS. Dakota Johnson wearing a Corssack hat makes her look like the cutest and the most voguish person ever….

Or go all black….. black coat, black tee, black pants and rock it like Winnie Harlow….

Black flaired pants, a neon turtleneck, a velvet blazer, ankle boots, and some really dark lipstick and that’s all you need to look _a la mode_…..

To be honest, all you need is a killer coat and it doesn’t even matter what you’re waering underneath!!!!!

Fashion Trends Today

By Abhijith A P , Sarath Madhavan C.K and Sreeram M

Popular culture and fashion are closely linked , as fashion , like popular culture ,  is dynamic and changes over periods. This can be seen today , as the current fashion trends are not similar to the fast trends of the seventies. Even in Ghana , fashion changes throughout time. Formerly , the fashionable “kaba” and “slit” , was a cherished culture in Ghana. Nana Odeneho said : “ Women who wore kaba and slit were considered beautiful in the society.” This fashion was also denoted as decent because it did not expose some parts of women.  Every generation has it’s fashion and way of dressing. Now , the t fashion trend has altered.

The word “fashion trend” means a change of clothing style. The first fashion capital of the world was Paris. The “Belle Epoque” was the very first fashion  trend. In the early 20th century , women had a conservative figure to concentrate on their body figure. A new style was born in the roaring 20’s , was thought to have brought the beginning of modern fashion.  The roaring 20’s was known for the flapper skirts , gathered skirts ,  pleated skirts , higher hemlines ,  and low-cut necklines.

Over the past decade ,  modern society has been taking on past fashion trends. The late 1900s have  fashion trends that became popular within the 2010s. There are at least six fashion trends from the late 20th century that are very common and are making an impact on the future of modern fashion. Denim jackets are a major fashion trend from the 90’s. They can be used for outfits that are girly , edgy or even Bohemian. They work in the winter and in the summer, and they are just perfect for every mood. They even make them to where they have patches on them. They can either be pre-ripped or just frayed at the edges.

Strictly looking at the fashion durng the 1920s , the decade featured the above fashion trends. Some of them , but not all , include what we have come to associate 1920s clothing with today. Absent are fishnet stockings , short fringe covered flapper dresses and gangster outfits that emerged in the 1960s does in the 1920s throwback. These make fun costumes for parties but have little place in the 1920s fashion history.

Fashion is still very important today as it was in the 60’s. Fashion today is influenced by the  models and famous celebrity icons. Youths all over the world watch the TV and follow the latest fashion trends ,  wanting to wear what is ‘in’ and ‘cool’. As soon as too many people start wearing a certain fashion style , people tend to change to something else that not as popular ,  hoping to stand out. Models wear the latest designer brands that are to come out for the season , and girls all over the world like the look ,  so they buy the clothes that represent the look that the models were wearing.

More than ever , the online community , starting with celebrities and influencers  on social media dictate the fashion trends. Today , these tools and platforms , along with technology , influence and shape purchase decisions. Fashion is not dictated exclusively by fashion weeks or well known celebrities anymore.  Thanks to the social networks , every girl/boy next door can become a trend-setter.
